TSA Statement on RC Vehicles

TSA Statement On Information Regarding Remote Control Toys

Press Release Press Release

Photo of various remote controlled toys

Washington-This notice is to explain why passengers may notice additional security measures related to remote control devices. In view of the period of strategic warning discussed in the National Intelligence Estimate on Homeland Security released in July, TSA is carefully monitoring information developed in the law enforcement and intelligence communities related to methods of possible attack.

While not associated with a specific threat at this time, TSA is aware that remote control toys can be used to initiate devices used in terrorist attacks.  Accordingly, Transportation Security Officers have trained on this possibility and travelers may encounter additional screening when bringing remote control devices in carry-on baggage.

Notice they do not say they are not allowed. They will just be checked more closely. Be sure to allow time before your flight just in case you get an agent that wants to be thorough. I fly almost every week and have some suggestions from my experiences and some racers who have passed on their suggestions.
The best info I can give is don't even think about developing an attitude with the TSA agent because they will make your life miserable! I know several people who have had that experience. Can we say strip search? The last couple of months they have checked my laptop and printer that I carry in my back pack. They don't say what they are looking for of course. I just think it's strange I have been carrying this stuff for almost 3 years and they just now start looking at it.

1) Ship everything possible. Either to your hotel or most races will have a shipping place set up.
2) If you carry your car or radio on as a carry on take the batteries out and put them in your checked luggage. Then you can show nothing can be powered up.
3) This one is from Skinny. Wrap the car minus wheels in saran wrap of course after you clean it.
4) Carry a magazine with you and maybe even a flier for the event your attending.
5) For rc stuff in checked luggage. Make sure they can open all boxes and compartments. If you want to lock your bags there are TSA locks available that the TSA agent can open and they won't have to cut the lock off or call you back to baggage check.
6) Clean the fuel tank and engines. It's questionable whther they can pick up fuel residue or not since I carry a plastic graduated cylinder for checking fuel volume in my check bag to every race and I never clean it out before I fly. I have never gotten to a race and it wasn't there. It may be broken but it IS there.

Now for Caribbean specific thoughts since we have a number of Caribbean drivers coming to the Finals. If you decide to ship equipment us the US Postal Service as much as possible. It doesn't cost anymore to send stuff USPS to or from Puerto Rico than it soes to send it from Texas to Cali. If you use UPS or FedX it will cost considerably more just because they have to cross the water.

I just updated the entries. I'm doing something different this year instead of shirts in case you didn't read the entry flier.
